The Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Political Science is a research-intensive programme designed for scholars dedicated to the advanced study of political ideas, institutions, and practices. Combining rigorous training in qualitative and quantitative research methodologies with critical engagement in both classical debates and contemporary issues, the programme prepares candidates to produce scholarship that is intellectually robust and socially meaningful. Through a balance of theoretical inquiry and empirical investigation, it equips researchers to address questions of governance, democracy, and global politics in evolving contexts.
Faculty expertise spans a wide range of areas, including Indian federalism, electoral politics, public policy, international relations, political economy, and South Asian studies. In addition, students are encouraged to pursue emerging domains such as environmental politics, digital governance, migration, and gender and politics, ensuring their research engages dynamically with the challenges of the 21st century. Admission to the programme is conducted in accordance with the University Grants Commission (UGC) eligibility norms, and merit-based scholarships are available to support candidates demonstrating exceptional research potential. Graduates of the programme are well-prepared to pursue careers in academia, policy research, governance, international organisations, media, and civil society.
A 1-year/2-semester master's degree programme after a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme or a 2-year/4-semester master’s degree programme after a 3-year bachelor’s degree programme or equivalent in the relevant master’s degree with at least 55% marks in aggregate or 5.5 CGPA on a 10-pointer scale to qualifying the CU-Ph.D. Entrance Test followed by an Interview.
A candidate who has completed a 4-year/8-semester bachelor’s degree programme with a minimum of 75% marks in aggregate or 7.5 CGPA on 10-pointer scale to qualifying the CU-PhDEntrance Test followed by Interview. (A relaxation of 5% marks or its equivalent grade may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-Abled, and Economically Weaker Section (EWS)). Note: Applicants who have qualified UGC (NET/ JRF)/ CSIR (NET/ JRF) examination/ valid GATE or GPAT scorecard or passed M.Phil. Programme (in Regular mode only) are exempted from CU-PhDEntrance Test
